DC Rape Crisis Center

The DC Rape Crisis Center accepts summer, fall semester, and spring semester interns to help us work toward our mission to end sexual violence in our communities. The DC Rape Crisis Center is one of the two oldest rape crisis centers in the country, and has been providing free services for sexual violence survivors, their friends, and their families for over 26 years.

The Center seeks diversity in its interns and volunteers, and individuals of all racial and

ethnic backgrounds, ages, classes, sexual orientation, and physical abilities are encouraged to become involved. All interns should be comfortable working with

a diverse group of people and be open to learning about the issues of sexual violence. Interns should have good listening skills, and strong oral and written communication skills. The Center offers internships in its Counseling and Advocacy, Community

Education, and Administrative/Development departments.

Here is a more detailed description of interns' responsibilities in each department: Counseling & Advocacy Interns in this area are responsible for collecting service-related counseling data and scheduling hotline shifts for the Center's volunteers. Interns also work on a variety of projects, including outreach programs within the community, research, organizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April), and improving protocol

procedures. Development In this department, interns have the opportunity to work with the Development Director in researching potential organizational donors and coordinating events. Interns also participate in an array of fundraising projects, such as direct mailings and phone-a-thons. Community Education Interns' primary responsibilities in this area revolve around offering presentations to schools, businesses and other organizations about sexual assault. Interns also schedule speaking engagements, plan the Take Back the Night march and rally, and assist in doing outreach in the community. Administration/Public Relations/Events Planning Administrative interns have the opportunity to be "behind the scenes", taking on projects that pull together DCRCC's different departments to create a single organization. Projects include assisting the Internship Coordinator with the Intern Program, planning for the annual Gala, as well as database mangement.
