HIST-110 N01L
Renaissance and Revolutions
6/29/09-
8/16/09
Instructor: April Shelford
This course covers European history from the Italian Renaissance to the French Revolution. We will concentrate on urban areas that are especially rich in cultural transformations and historical events, for example, Renaissance Florence, Civil War London, and Enlightenment Paris, and we will view the past through a variety of personal experiences, male and female. The course will emphasize: Learning some of the period’s major historical trends; thinking “like a historian,” that is, viewing history not just as a body of knowledge, but as an interpretive challenge to every generation; becoming critical readers and effective writers; developing basic research tools; and gaining a new perspective on our own values and historical moment by imaginatively engaging with the past.
