The overall goals of this course are to provide a foundation of knowledge and understanding about both the brain and theories of emotion. This foundation will support the subsequent exploration and evaluation of recent works examining the neurobiological, behavioral, and cognitive processes underlying emotion-related phenomena. Students will learn the basics about the brain and how it works, particularly in relation to neural systems involved in emotional processes. This course also serves as a primer on the theoretical bases and special methodological nature of the scientific study of emotion, including a discussion of topics in affective and social neuroscience, social attachment, empathy, fear, stress, the recognition of emotion in faces, as well as the emotional aspects of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and autism. |
