The course, Understanding Government in Africa through Novels, Radio, and Film, will use a number of African novels, African feature films, historical radio addresses, music clips, and political/historical texts to examine several major themes in the government and politics of Africa. These themes could include precolonial governance, colonialism and resistance to colonialism, nationalism/independence, the modern state, ethnicity, racism, modernization/Westernization, and globalization/development. Throughout the course the class will compare literature from various regions of the continent, while attempting to ascertain the social and local level reality of national politics. |
