The saxophone has always been associated with the music of today. The instrument's flexibility to adapt to all styles of music has been lauded by composers, musicians, and audiences throughout the 20th century. This event highlights the relationship between composer and performer that has created some of the most vital works of music for the saxophone.
  • Demonstrations: Distinguished pedagogues and researchers will highlight the saxophone and its unique place in contemporary music. Lectures will include Debussy's "secret" to musical composition, expressive microrhythm in jazz, and microtonal composition. Performance demonstrations will showcase Dr. Gregory Wanamaker and saxophone compositions by female composers of the United States with a special focus on Katherine Murdock.

  • Dr. John Sampen Masterclass: As one of America's leading concert saxophonists, Dr. John Sampen is recognized as a distinguished artist in contemporary literature. He has commissioned over sixty new works, including compositions by Babbitt, Bolcolm, Cage and Rands and has premiered saxophone versions of music by Lutoslawski, Stockhausen and Tower. Dr. John Sampen will present a two-hour masterclass on Saturday, March 26, 2005 as part of the Saxophone Symposium co-sponsored by American University and The Levine School of Music. Amateur saxophonists are invited to submit taped auditions to be participants in the masterclass. If you are interested in performing at the masterclass, please contact Dr. Noah Getz at 202-463-6298 or getz@american.edu for more information.

  • New Works Concert: This concert will debut new saxophone works written specifically for the symposium, performed by Adam Muller with accompanist Matthew Van Hoose. Repertoire will be selected from works awarded as Saxophone Symposium Composition Contest prize winners. Winning composers will have an opportunity to introduce their works during the program.
  • Brian Minor Tribute Concert: The Encore Series Tribute pays homage to a performer and pedagogue who forged important new relationships with prominent composers such as Vincent Persichetti and Pulitzer-Prize winner Karel Husa. The works that he commissioned and performed during his career have created a lasting legacy. The concert will be performed by Noah Getz, Brian Jones, and Matthew Van Hoose.
