We are writing to update you on the search for provost. As you know, the search began in late November and early December, with announcements in the Chronicle of Higher Education and many other publications. We selected a search consultant (Witt/Kieffer) and met with various campus constituencies to discuss the search process and seek advice. We received more than 100 applications and nominations. Following careful review, 11 candidates were invited to meet with both the search committee and President Kerwin.
Based on these interviews, four candidates have been invited to visit the campus.
- April 10–11: Scott A. Bass, vice president for research and dean of the graduate school at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County
- April 14–15: Ivy Broder, interim provost, American University
- April 15–16: Robert J. Thompson Jr., dean, Trinity College, Duke University
- April 17–18: Charles A. Johnson, dean of liberal arts, Texas A&M University
Details of the individual visits will be posted shortly. Faculty, students, staff, and administrators will have an opportunity to meet with each candidate, both in small groups and in an open meeting with the campus community.
Each candidate’s curriculum vitae is password protected and accessible to campus community members via the portal. To view the candidate CVs, go to my.american.edu and log in. Select the Academics section, go to Personalized Links, and click on Provost Search: Candidate Information. Each name is the link to a candidate’s CV.
We strongly encourage the active participation of all members of the AU community at this critically important point in the search. We urge you to review each candidate’s credentials, attend meetings at which they will be present, and, above all, communicate your recommendations to committee members. Response sheets will be available at the various meetings, but you are also encouraged to communicate directly with members of the search committee, whose names and email addresses may be found on the Provost Search Web site.
