Naomi Baron, Director, TESOL Programs, Principles of Linguistics & Structure of English: Dr. Baron received her PhD in Linguistics from Stanford. A specialist in language acquisition, written language, and English linguistics, Dr. Baron's latest book Alphabet to Email: How Written English Evolved and Where It's Heading received the English-Speaking Union, Duke of Edinburgh's English Language Award 2000. A former Guggenheim Fellow and past president of the Semiotic Society of America, she has authored over 50 articles and five other books, including: Growing Up With Language: How Children Learn to Talk, and Computer Language: A Guide for the Perplexed.
Robin Barr, Linguist in Residence, Teaching Pronunciation: Robin Barr holds a PhD in Linguistics from Harvard with concentrations in both Indo-European and psycholinguistics. Her research on morphology involves the relationship between language learning and language change, and she is always happy to hear of new irregular verbs or refinements for wug-tests. Her daughter has been one of her favorite informants, and students are likely to encounter data from her on their problem sets. Dr. Barr is also an avid amateur oboist.
Sigrun Biesenbach-Lucas, Portfolio Advisor, ELT II, ELT III, & Second Language Acquisition (Adult): Sigrun Biesenbach-Lucas, Assistant Professor in the TESOL Program holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Georgetown University. Her research focuses on pragmatic differences between NS and NNS student/professor interaction in electronic discourse and how these findings may be used in designing functional ESL teaching materials. She has also been investigating the effects of technology on learning, in particular to how technology can best be used to enhance the learning of English as a Second Language. She has presented at many international, national, and local conferences and has published in "Language Learning & Technology" and "Computer Assisted Language Learning", among others.
 
Brock Brady, TESOL Coordinator, Cultural Issues in ESL/EFL Classroom : Brock Brady teaches courses in Language Assessment, Cultural Issues in the ESL/EFL Classroom, and Curriculum and Materials Development, and Teaching Methodology. His research interests include cross-cultural discourse analysis, new methods for teaching pronunciation, teacher preparation programs, and methodology of successful distance learning. He is a past president of the Washington Area TESOL Affiliate.

Adam Gray, Adjunct Professor: Adam Gray graduated with distinction from the AU TESOL program in May 2002, after having taught elementary education in Chile for two years and then adult education in the DC area for two years. In the summer of 2002, he taught a course in adult ESL at the University of Maryland English Institute, where he evaluated student writing. He is currently teaching at Bancroft Elementary School in DC.

Rae Roberts, Adjunct Professor, Principles of Linguistics (K-12): Rae Roberts holds an MA TESOL from American University, an MPA from Harvard JFK School of Government, and a B.S. in Community Service and Public Affairs from the University of Oregon. She has taught ESL in immigrant programs, business English, and pre-academic classes. In 2002, she provided teacher training in China, and she is presently engaged in training teachers on-line for TEFL certification.

Karen Schramm, Adjunct Professor: teaches elementary school courses at DC’s German school. Previously she was a German Language and Culture Instructor at the Foreign Service Institute of the State Department in Arlington, VA. From 1998 to 2001 she was a Visiting Professor in the Department of German Language and Literature at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. She received her PhD. in Second Language Acquisition and Foreign Language Teaching at the University of Münster in Germany. Last Summer she taught Cultural Issues in the ESL/EFL Classroom at AU
Karen Taylor, Adjunct Professor, Teaching Pronunciation: Instructional Technology Coordinator, Arlington Employment and Educational Program (REEP). Karen Taylor holds an M.A. in TESOL from the Monterey Institute for International Studies and a B.A. in English Literature from Georgetown University. She has taught English and Spanish and has trained teachers for World Teach and The University of Namibia. Her interests include technology-enhanced instruction and Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory.

Full-Time Staff

Maria Consuelo Gall, Administrative Assistant for LFS: Maria Consuelo Gall is a Colombian citizen who received her diploma in Liberal Arts and English from Hartwell House in the U.K. She has been teaching Spanish for 4 years at Lafayette Elementary School in the District of Columbia. Consuelo has accompanied her husband in long-term postings to the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. She enjoys walking with her dog Sali, and swimming and rowing in the Potomac.
Susan Sherzer, Senior Administrative Assistant for LFS: Susan received her B.A. in English from the University of Texas in Austin. A long-time resident of Montgomery County, she enjoys reading, watching old movies, and spending time with her husband, son, daughter, and grandsons, all of whom live in the Washington area.

Program Assistants

Sakeena Ali, Graduate Assistant: Sakeena graduated from the University of California at San Diego in 2001 with a BA in both Human Development and History with a minor in Teacher Education. She studied abroad with Semester at Sea through the University of Pittsburgh. She enjoys traveling around the world and has visited many countries while working on an educational cruise ship. She also enjoys learning about various cultures and practices. She is currently in the MIP in TESOL program. She hopes to start her Peace Corps position Fall 2004.
Christina Cavella, Graduate Assistant: Christina graduated from Arcadia University in May of 2001 with a BA in Sociology and Spanish. During that time, she studied abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico to improve her Spanish proficiency. She also studied abroad in Toledo, Spain where she completed her undergraduate thesis on domestic violence. Christina has taught adult ESL at La Comunidad Hispana in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. She is currently studying to obtain an MA in TESOL.
Robin Kernodle, Graduate Assistant: Robin graduated from Harding University in 1998 with a BA in English. She holds certification in Secondary English and taught in a bilingual school in Honduras for one year before returning to the U.S. to teach in the public school system in Nashville, TN. She later served as the coordinator of Learn To Read, Inc., a nonprofit agency in Jacksonville, Florida devoted to adult literacy. She currently volunteers in a faith-based ESL program in DC. Robin is in the MA in TESOL program.
Katie Leite, Graduate Assistant: Katie graduated from Nazareth College in 2002 with a BA in Mathematics, a minor in Spanish, and a secondary math certification. She has taught English to adult migrants through BOCES in New York state. She was also a high school math teacher in Maryland. Katie is currently in the MA in TESOL program.
Flannery O'Neil, Web Designer: Flannery is a junior at American University with a major in International Studies and a minor in Spanish. She plans to graduate December 2004. She has lived in the DC area for two years and is originally from Louisville, Kentucky.
Gillian Safdie-Miller, Work Study: Gillian is a sophomore from Nashville, TN. She is in the Kogod School of Business at AU. She is a member of Alpha Chi Omega. Gillian enjoys playing tennis, traveling, and is will be studying abroad in France next year.

Tiffany Shao, Graduate Assistant: Tiffany has earned a BA in Government and Politics from University of Maryland, College Park in 1992. She 'stumbled' into TESOL while living in Taiwan for 2 years. Convinced that “just because you speak English does not mean you can teach it”, she decided to attend graduate school and is currently in the MA TESOL program. She loves reading and traveling.
Judith Yancey, Graduate Assistant: Judith graduated from Duke University in 1999 with a BA in English and a Philosophy minor. She holds a Certificate to teach ESL and is currently enrolled in the MA TESOL Program. Her interests include travel, cooking, and learning about other cultures. She has worked as a tutor for numerous international students and scholars, and is presently teaching at Sylvan Learning Center of Maryland.
